Copeland Roberts 017 Post Auction Report

Copeland Roberts 017 Results.
Copeland Roberts Auction 017 was held on June 26 2026, offering 895 lots across Australian pre-decimal coins, sovereigns, decimal errors, world coins, ancient coins and English hammered coinage.
The auction realised just under $600,000 including buyer’s premium and achieved a sell-through rate of over 99%. Only seven lots passed in, with strong competition recorded across nearly every major section of the catalogue.
For me, one of the most encouraging aspects of Auction 017 was not simply the overall result, but the depth of bidding across a broad range of collecting areas. Demand remained strong for quality Australian coins, while the results also demonstrated the increasing strength of our world, ancient and hammered coin sections.

Australian Error Coin Highlights
Australian decimal errors were among the strongest areas of the sale.
The leading error was a 1981 Australian 20-cent coin struck on a scalloped Hong Kong $2 planchet. Certified PCGS MS64 and recorded as a top-population example, the coin realised $13,664.
The result reflected the continuing demand for dramatic and readily identifiable Australian mint errors, particularly those combining rarity, strong visual appeal and third-party certification.
Pre-Decimal Australian Coin Results
The Australian pre-decimal section also performed strongly.
A 1934 Proof Australian Penny, certified PCGS PR64BN, sold for $7,686.
A 1922/21 Overdate Threepence graded Very Good realised $4,148, substantially exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $1,500–$2,500.
The threepence result was particularly notable because it demonstrated that strong competition is not confined to high-grade certified coins.
Scarce Australian varieties remain keenly sought after when they are accurately attributed, conservatively described and offered with clear photography.
Australian Gold and Sovereigns
Australian gold continued to attract competitive bidding throughout the auction.
An 1875-S Australian Half Sovereign, formerly part of the Reserve Bank of Australia Hoard and certified PCGS AU55, realised $2,623 against an estimate of $1,000–$1,200.
Provenance, certification and the continuing interest in Australian branch-mint gold all contributed to the strength of the result.
World, Ancient and Hammered Coins
Auction 017 marked another step forward for the world, ancient and hammered sections of Copeland Roberts auctions.
The catalogue included Roman and Byzantine gold coins, English hammered issues and a broad selection of world gold and silver coinage.
A gold solidus of the Byzantine emperor Maurice Tiberius, catalogued as almost uncirculated, sold for $1,739 against an estimate of $600–$800.
Results such as this demonstrate the developing Australian market for ancient and historical world coinage. They also show the benefit of presenting specialist material to both Australian collectors and an established international bidding audience.
Record Buyer Participation
Auction 017 established a new Copeland Roberts record for buyer registrations, with 466 registered buyers participating across the pre-bidding and live components of the auction.
The number of participants was encouraging, but the breadth of activity was equally significant. Competitive bidding was not restricted to a small number of headline lots and remained consistent across Australian coins, errors, sovereigns, world coins and ancient material.
