Coin Consignment Services
Sell Your Coins Through Australia’s Specialist Auction House
Thinking about selling your coins? Consigning to a specialist auction house is the smartest way to get the best price. At Copeland Roberts, we handle everything — from free appraisals and professional photography to expert cataloguing and marketing to our network of registered collectors across Australia and internationally.
Unlike selling to a coin dealer, where you accept a single offer below market value, auction creates competition. Multiple bidders drive the price up, and you keep more of the proceeds. It’s why serious collectors and estates choose auction over private sale.

Send us photographs of your coins — clear images of the front and back of each piece. You can submit these through our online appraisal form or email them directly. Our team will review your coins and provide a no-obligation auction estimate, including a recommended reserve price and the expected sale range. This service is completely free.
We assess coins based on rarity, condition, current market demand, and recent auction comparables. If your coins include PCGS or NGC certified pieces, include the certification numbers — this helps us provide a more accurate estimate.

If you’re happy with the estimate and decide to consign, we’ll send you a simple consignment agreement. This outlines the terms, including the seller’s commission, reserve price, and auction timeline.
For collections in the Sydney area, we can arrange collection from your home or office. For interstate and regional consignors, we provide detailed instructions for secure insured shipping. Every coin is insured from the moment it enters our care.

How Coin Consignment Works at Copeland Roberts
Our consignment process is designed to be simple, transparent, and stress-free. Here’s how it works from start to finish:
Step one
Free Appraisal
Send us photographs of your coins — clear images of the front and back of each piece. You can submit these through our online appraisal form or email them directly. Our team will review your coins and provide a no-obligation auction estimate, including a recommended reserve price and the expected sale range. This service is completely free.

Step two
Agreement and Collection
If you’re happy with the estimate and decide to consign, we’ll send you a simple consignment agreement. This outlines the terms, including the seller’s commission, reserve price, and auction timeline.
For collections in the Sydney area, we can arrange collection from your home or office. For interstate and regional consignors, we provide detailed instructions for secure insured shipping. Every coin is insured from the moment it enters our care.
Step three
Professional Cataloguing and Photography
This is where a specialist auction house makes the difference. Every coin is individually catalogued with a detailed description covering denomination, date, mintmark, grade, provenance (where known), and any notable features. We photograph each lot in high resolution under controlled lighting so bidders can assess condition accurately.
The quality of cataloguing directly affects the final price. Collectors bid with confidence when they can see exactly what they’re buying. Our descriptions are written by numismatic specialists, not general auctioneers.
Step FOUR
Marketing to Collectors
Your coins are marketed to our full database of registered bidders — collectors, investors, and dealers across Australia and internationally. We promote upcoming auctions through email campaigns, social media, and our website. High-value lots receive additional targeted marketing.
Because Copeland Roberts specialises exclusively in coins and numismatic collections, our entire bidder network is made up of people who want exactly what you’re selling. This is fundamentally different from a general auction house where coin lots compete for attention against furniture, art, and jewellery.
Step FIVE
Live Online Auction
On auction day, your coins go live on our online bidding platform. Bidders participate in real time from anywhere in Australia or internationally. The competitive bidding format means the market sets the price — not a single dealer making a lowball offer.
You can watch the auction live and see your lots sell in real time. Reserve prices protect you from selling below an agreed minimum.
Step SIX
Payment
After the auction closes and buyers have settled, you receive payment within 30 days. We provide a full settlement statement showing the hammer price for each lot, the seller’s commission, and the net amount paid to you. Everything is transparent and documented.
What We Accept for Consignment
Copeland Roberts accepts a wide range of numismatic material for auction. The following items are regularly consigned:
- Australian pre-decimal coins (pennies, halfpennies, florins, crowns, shillings)
- Australian decimal coins (including errors, commemoratives, and coloured issues)
- Gold sovereigns — Sydney Mint, Melbourne Mint, and Perth Mint
- Gold coins — Australian and international
- Silver coins and proof sets — RAM, Perth Mint, and international mints
- PCGS and NGC certified (slabbed) coins
- Banknotes — Australian pre-decimal and decimal
- World and ancient coins
- Medals, tokens, and numismatic accessories
- Complete collections and estates
Not sure if your items are suitable? Send us photos and we’ll let you know. There’s no obligation and no cost for an initial assessment.
Why Auction Beats Selling to a Coin Dealer
When you sell coins to a dealer, you receive a single offer. That offer has to be low enough for the dealer to resell at a profit. Typically, a dealer will offer 40–60% of the coin’s retail value.
When you consign to auction, the dynamic is completely different. Multiple collectors compete for your coins. The price is set by the market, not by one buyer’s margin requirement. Coins regularly achieve prices above the pre-sale estimate when two or more determined bidders want the same lot.
Auction is especially advantageous for rare, high-grade, or unusual coins where there may be limited price references. These are the coins that dealers tend to undervalue because they’re harder to price — but they’re exactly the coins that passionate collectors will compete for at auction.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coin Consignment
How much does it cost to consign?
There is no upfront cost. The seller’s commission is deducted from the sale proceeds after your coins sell. The commission rate is competitive and discussed during the consignment agreement stage. There are no listing fees, photography fees, or marketing charges.
Is there a minimum value for consignment?
We generally accept consignments where individual lots are expected to realise $50 or more at auction. For larger collections, we’re happy to discuss lotting strategies that group lower-value items together to meet the threshold.
Can I consign from outside Sydney?
Yes. We accept consignments from across Australia and internationally. For interstate consignors, we provide instructions for secure insured posting. For large or high-value collections, we may arrange personal collection depending on the circumstances.
How long does the process take?
From consignment to auction is typically 4–8 weeks, depending on the size of the collection and our auction calendar. Payment is made within 30 days after the auction closes and buyers have settled.
What if my coins don’t sell?
If a coin does not meet its reserve price, it is passed in and returned to you at no charge. We will discuss options for re-offering at a future auction or adjusting the reserve if appropriate.
Do you accept inherited collections?
Absolutely. Estate and inherited collections are one of the most common types of consignment we handle. If you’ve inherited coins and aren’t sure what they’re worth, our free appraisal service is the best place to start. We’ll assess the collection, advise on value, and handle the entire auction process if you decide to sell.
